A new study from Northwestern University suggests how un-illuminating many pharmacy-counter exchanges might be for those who speak only Spanish. Of 764 pharmacies, only 43.3% could solidly offer instructions in Spanish, 21.7% offered some translation services and 34.9% offered no such services.

From providing translations for residents dealing with city agencies, to a bill that would require pharmacies to provide prescription information in languages spoken in every city community, there’s a growing movement spearheaded by the Bloomberg administration and some City Council members to dramatically widen the requirements for translation services.

Governments are struggling to communicate the latest updates about Swine Flu to those who have little English proficiency. Communication across national boundaries requires adequate – and reliable – multilingual support across a wide array of media, and in nearly every country, across many languages.

In a lengthy investigation by the New York State office of Attorney General Andrew M. Cuomo, it has been found that pharmacies across the state, in violation of the law and at great risk to customers, routinely failed to provide information about medication in a language their immigrant customers could understand. Five major chains that sell prescription drugs have now agreed to provide customers with information about them in the customers’ primary languages.
