Flemish is a variety of the Dutch language that is mainly spoken in the North of Belgium by more than 6 million people. Although it originally refers to a group of dialects, it is commonly used today to refer to Dutch as spoken by Belgian people. In other words, it is a national variety, like American and British English.
The first written example is a late 11th century love poem, written in old-Dutch or more specifically South-West Flemish:
Hebban olla vogala nestas hagunnan
All the birds have begun their nests
Hinase hic enda thu
Except me and you
Uuat unbidan uue nu?

The main differences between Flemish and Dutch are pronunciation and lexicology. Belgian Dutch encompasses more French loanwords in everyday vocabulary than Dutch spoken in the Netherlands. In this way, a Flemish speaker would say confituur (confiture in French – marmelade) instead of jam and ambetant (embêtant in French – annoying) instead of vervelend.
