German is a constituent of the West Germanic languages group and one of the world's major languages. Around the world, German is spoken by approximately 100 million native speakers, primarily in Germany (95%), Austria (89%), and Switzerland (64%).
German differs regionally, especially between German-speaking countries. For example, the pronunciation and vocabulary at public occasions used in Austria is quite different from any other dialect including the one used in Germany. German is thus considered a pluricentric language.
Modern spoken forms of German fall into two main groups, corresponding to a geographical divide: so-called Low German (“Plattdeutsch”, spoken in the low-lying coastal plain area that forms the northern half of Germany), and High German (“Hochdeutsch”, spoken in the upland plateau and mountainous region that forms the southern half of Germany and all of Austria and Switzerland).
One way to define dialects is to compare which words are used for the same thing. For example, the common word for "mosquito" in German may take any of the following forms in various German dialects/regions: Gelse, Moskito, Mugge, MĂĽcke, Schnake, Staunze.
German is one of the most important cultural languages, many famous writers, composers and scientists such as Goethe, Mozart, Beethoven, Freud and Einstein wrote and spoke German.
