Spanish is an Indo-European, Romance language that originated in northern Spain, and gradually spread in the Kingdom of Castile and evolved into the principal language of government and trade. It was taken to Africa, the Americas and Asia Pacific with the expansion of the Spanish Empire between the fifteenth and nineteenth centuries. Today, between 322 and 400 million people speak Spanish as a native language making it the world’s second most-spoken language by native speakers (after Mandarin Chinese).

The Spanish vocabulary is of Latin origin, though many of the words differ markedly from their counterparts in French and Italian. Prolonged contact with Germanic and later Arabic languages affected its evolution but did not risk the decrease in Romance speaking. Germanic and Arabic have left their mark on the Spanish language as words like ‘guerra’ – war and ‘algebra’ – in mathematics can both be traced back to their respective Germanic and Arabic origins.

Spanish in Spain and Spanish in Latin America vary slightly as the languages have evolved since the colonisation of the Americas. The most obvious influence is the use of indigenous words in Latin America and differing pronunciation.
