The growth in the world’s online population is coming from the non-English speaking world. Internet penetration is relatively low in the majority of countries in Asia, Africa and South America. Developing infrastructure is paving the way for better telecommunication giving more people the chance to get online.

From a technical perspective, the introduction of Internationalized Domain Names (IDNs) is preparing world languages for online use. The multilingual audience amounts for more than 70% of the web and this is yet to increase. Using data from Common Sense Advisory (CSA), we look at the languages that matter online in the infographic below:



As the infographic illustrates, it takes 12 languages to reach 80% of the web and 21 languages to reach 90% of the web. The opportunities from translating a corporate site into these languages will allow a business to prepare for the global web audience.
